About
In 2024, a routine Tennessee Department of Transportation inspection of the Gay Street Bridge revealed a compromised element, which out of an abundance of caution led to a closure of the bridge to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. After extensive repairs were made to the structure, the Gay Street Bridge was reopened to pedestrians and bicyclists on December 16, 2025.
Because the bridge is closed to vehicles, the South Knoxville Connectivity Study is looking at opportunities to improve connectivity in the region, leveraging low-cost, high-impact improvements that will enhance travel to and from South Knoxville.
